CROSS CONNECTIONS CAN BE DEADLY!
The North Ogden Water Department is proud of the drinking
water it provides. Spring and well water is piped to reservoirs where it is carefully treated with chlorine by trained and certified experts to be sure that it is safe for you to drink. After treatment, the water is then delivered to you through a long series of pipes called a distribution system.
What is a CROSS CONNECTION? Polluted water doesn’t belong in your culinary water system but it can end up there if you are not careful. A cross connection is a link between the drinking water supply and any pipes or fixture that may contain polluted water which includes secondary or irrigation water. You wouldn’t want to turn on your faucet and find antifreeze or soapy water
coming out, would you? A cross connection can be an open pathway for pollution to get into your drinking water. Backflow is the term used by the North Ogden Water Department to describe how dirty water, chemicals and other contaminants can enter the drinking water supply. Backflow means that the liquid is going the wrong direction in the pipe and that means the dirty water can get into the water line.
What happens if polluted water gets into the drinking water supply through cross connection? Polluted water can spread diseases such as typhoid, polio dysentery and hepatitis. Chemicals can be poisonous. Some types of contaminants can cause damage to the water distribution system, your plumbing fixtures, and water piping.
How can backflow be prevented? The North Ogden Water Department is doing a lot to make sure backflow doesn’t happen. Water pressure is kept as high as possible at all times and customers are notified when the water will be shut off if at all possible, so they won’t be caught in the middle of an activity without any water. Backflow can also be prevented by installing special kinds of valves in the water system that will not allow the water to flow backwards; these are called backflow prevention devices.
North Ogden City WHO’S BEHIND THE PLOW?
The snowflakes begin to fall on the City of North Ogden. The prediction is a big storm. As the snow builds up on streets and roads, most residents are asleep. A call goes out at 2 am from the Police Officer on-duty; the roads are getting slick and the plowing needs to begin. The snow keeps coming down as 17 public works and parks employees climb out of their warm beds and come in to man the ten large trucks, the road grader and 6 small pickups used to clear the 164 miles of city streets. The work begins on the main roads in an effort to keep them open for emergency vehicles, schools, and businesses. The drivers feel fortunate; because of the early hour, they only have to dodge low hanging branches, an occasional parked car and the few garbage cans left out from the day before.
Plowing is a learned skill and it will be several seasons before a new employee graduates to the 10-wheelers. Snow plow drivers have to learn to gauge their speed so they are going fast enough to push the snow but not so fast that the heavy slush is thrown against mailboxes and parked cars. It takes four passes on each side of the road to clear the snow. On some of the wider roads it takes six. By the time residents begin to wake up and realize they will be out shoveling, City workers have been on the job for about three hours working on the icy streets, fighting the darkness and fast falling snow.
With a snow storm that dumps 3” and then stops it takes the City’s snow removal equipment and manpower 8 hours to clear all the roads in the community. If the snow laid down exceeds 3” it takes approximately two additional hours to clear the roads for each additional inch that falls. There is at least one storm a year where City employees will work 20+ hours to clear the roads. Many times they are called out to plow after working their regular 8-hour shifts. This makes for long days and little family time especially when the weather is bad. For the past two years, City employees were out plowing on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. It was hard not being home when the kids got their first look at the presents under the Christmas tree.
Snowy weather is frustrating for everyone. Shoveling out your driveway just to have the plow come by and fill it back in would test anyone’s patience. If it is any consolation, many of North Ogden City’s snow plow drivers are plowing in their own driveways and mail boxes as they clear the City’s streets. They have to go home after their 12-hour shifts and dig out too. The next time the roads are covered in snow, smile and wave when you see the plows coming down the street. The drivers are working hard to make it a little easier for all of us to get where we need to go.
Dear North Ogden City Citizen:
The public works snowplowing procedure during normal business hours is as follows and has not changed due to any economic crisis. We do not start plowing until 3 inches or more (this is the standard set by all cities). We go out prior to that and salt. After 3 inches we plow the entire city, which takes 8-10 hours with school zones and intersections the priority. If the storm lets up, we branch out into subdivisions until we have the entire city clean. If the snow does not let up then we concentrate on the main roads. This happens during normal working hours. After hours the police officer on duty will contact the public works on call employee who will call the Maintenance Supervisor and together they will decide if they need to send the plows out. As of January 6, 2009 we have used 600 tons of salt. The city has over 300 miles of road to plow each time.
We value the safety of our residents and make it a priority to plow our roads. If you would like to speak with me personally, please call me direct at 940-1920 I would be glad to speak with you.
Sincerely,
Mel Blanchard
Public Works Director
